a False Profit record label!

So I've produced all this new music and I'm ready to release it into the world. I spent a little effort trying to get the attentions of some small labels, but I couldn't even get them to listen to a demo. So screw them, it's 2008 and Label 1.0 is dead. It's time for Label 2.0: False Profit Recordings! (label name open for discussion..)

The label, like everything FP does, would be run by volunteers and keep no monetary profit for itself... it's more about expanding the FP brand into new territories, giving power to the artists, and encouraging artists' mutual support. This project can be as big or as small as people want to make it. The bare minimum I envision is: community approval, a logo, a minisite on fp.com (recordings.false-profit.com?), and the announcement of the first two releases, Dr. Toast's "The Wave Function" and "The Entanglement EP". The record release party would also be a label launch party!

But we can take the concept further by encouraging our music-dabbling friends to get their shit together, make some quality music, and release it under the FP brand. We can do co-branding and cross promotions with other communities, groups, and labels that are near and dear to us (OEM Radio/Dub Beautiful? Space Cowboys?) The music can be offered for free, it can be offered for sale/donations accepted, it can be creative commons licensed or copyrighted... This label is about letting artists do whatever it is they feel works best for them and their music.

I would love to get a) the community's blessing to go ahead with this, and optionally b) interested parties to join me in setting up a minisite (wordpress blog with custom theme?), a logo and branding materials (baroo with a treble clef? baroo with an eighth-note dollar sign?), and/or contributing their own quality music to release under the FP brand.

Let me know what you think!

Nice one man, best of luck, although I always have to say when someone makes a 'screw them' comment about labels.
It is always in a labels interest to listen to demos, so they would have to either be too small to know better, or they
already have a full release schedule, but even then merely by the fact they run a record label.
I would guess they are music fans and would still at least listen to a demo.
I receive at least ten demos a week in some form at the two labels I run, neither of which received a demo from you ;)
The only ones I sometimes don't listen to are if they only send a myspace link.
I often do still even listen to those, but if Myspace player is not loading fast or at all,
then it becomes a pain in the ass and I keep on with the work I'm doing.

It's easy to run a 'small' label for yourself and friends but be aware of brand building and minimum payment requirements,
which often mean that if your material is too broadly distributed and you only have a small catalog, then you may not even reach the minimums that require a store / retailer to pay you.

I've been working on / with indie labels for 10 years, so if you need any advice I'd be happy to help.

          Hi Dov.

I didn't mean any offense to our friends who run their own labels, or even to the world of independent labels in general - it was sort of a snarky comment voiced out of frustration and meant to get people all riled up for the cause. Muti always puts out quality music, and seems to have a nice family atmosphere about it that I hope to be able to emulate with the FP imprint.

And in fact, I did send an email with demo download links to you on February 12. It didn't get bounced back, but maybe it got spam filtered? Of course, I could have followed up with you and with the others from whom I got no response, but by that point I was already feeling disillusioned and leaning heavily towards starting an FP imprint and seeing how that goes.

I have tons of respect for what you've done in SF with Muti Music as an independent label, and would really love to pick your brain and get you involved in what we're doing. Strategic partnerships are a big part of what we'd like to do. (Perhaps you'd like to include one of our tracks on a Muti compilation, or vice versa? I can re-send that download link.) The FP brand is currently our strongest asset, and we'd love to leverage that to the benefit of all in our extended music community.

          Best,

          Jim/Toast

also, one of the notions Toast and I discussed for FP-Records involves cobranding releases with other labels.

so, it's not a "screw you, labels!" it's intended to be a platform for artists who are a part of or linked to the FP community.
